Background & Brief

The client has a portfolio of over 350 stores across the UK serviced primarily by a new DC in the North and the assistance of some regional hauliers. The client wanted an unbiased review of current operations specifically focusing on transport efficiency with a view to understanding potential improvements and service cost reduction.  

Project Approach

The project approach combined;
  • A thorough review of the in-house transport operation, to understand the volumes, planning methods, operational stability and the restrictions
  • Process Mapping the operational activity from order to delivery
  • Analysis of operational activity; warehouse and vehicle utilisation, driver planning, shift utilisation
  • A detailed review of the current fleet and identification of actual requirements Identification of Improvement opportunities primarily through service amendments

    The benefits & results of the project included the following key outputs;
  • Development of several options for a new store schedule with SCALA recommendation of the most suitable
  • Revised way of working with selected regional partners to improve delivery efficiency
  • Reduced requirement for own fleet vehicles
  • Substantial reduction in delivery miles and hours
  • Improved balance across the week, reducing volumetric peaks and troughs
  • Identification of opportunity to improve delivery process and improve driver utilisation
  • Final Outcome

    SCALA were requested to liaise with the regional partners to develop the opportunities identified and the client began to implement the in-house changes.
