Background & Brief

The client’s is a leader in customer service and product innovation. Their business is undergoing very significant growth and additionally major changes will be required in the future to enable the customisation of products at the Distribution Centre prior to despatch and significant enhancements in future customer service propositions. SCALA was engaged to design the new Distribution Centre operations, processes and systems to cost-effectively accommodate their planned growth and allow for new planned and unplanned activities. Subsequent SCALA Phases are to manage the full operational implementation (excluding build construction). The New DC operation will become a model for replication across the world

Project Approach

The project was made up of 5 major phases. The key undertakings for each phase were as follows:
  • Phase 1: Scope requirements and future scenarios – planned growth of 20% per annum
  • Phase 2: “As is” evaluation and assessment – detailed assessment of current operations, methods, processes and costs
  • Phase 3: Distribution Centre design – structure, size, orientation, layout, racking, MHE, automation, IT systems. Full 3D CAD
  • Phase 4: Strategic Roadmap – timing, optional approaches
  • Phase 5: Business case and presentation – including capital investment, operating and change costs

    The benefits and results of the project included the following key outputs;

  • A significant degree of state-of-the-art automation where justified
  • Flexibility provided for various scenarios
  • Incorporation of a refurbishment activity and customisation facility into the DC

    SCALA are continuing to work with the client to develop and implement their Warehousing and Logistics Strategy
