Spectrum Brands, a global manufacturer and distributor of consumer goods whose brands include Russell Hobbs, Remington and George Foreman, has successfully transformed its European logistics network into a fully centralised, purpose-built operation in partnership with SCALA and 3PL provider, DSV.
Supported by SCALA, the project involved developing a future-proof distribution network and consolidating logistics providers to enhance efficiency and control over a network which was deemed no longer fit for its modern operations. Prior to the redesign, the primary warehouse (est. 2020) was undersized by around c.50%, which contributed to inefficiencies as well as a reliance on additional sites, and the site network included more than four logistics providers, increasing fragmentation and cost opacity.
SCALA delivered an end-to-end transformation programme integrated across three phases. The first consisted of a centre of gravity study, which identified the most advantageous European warehouse location and network design. SCALA then formulated and ran a competitive tender process and selected DSV as the strategic logistics partner. They also provided support for Spectrum Brands throughout the evolutionary process, which included planning, co-ordination and risk management for the new operating model.
The project was an unmitigated success, delivering a significant transformation in Spectrum Brand’s manufacturing capabilities with a fully operational, future-proof European logistics network. The new solution comes with a 65,000 pallet capacity for optimal efficiency, with over 180,000 pallet equivalents shipped annually.
Chris Clowes, executive director at SCALA, said:
“The collaboration on this project was instrumental to its success. In addition to the consolidation of multiple providers into a single integrated solution, our teams were able to integrate a network designed to bolster future growth and demand variability.
“As a result of our work, Spectrum Brands now has a logistics solution in the form of a fully operational, future-proof European logistics network that will streamline their operations.
“When it comes to moving the supply chain industry forward to face increasing demands and the latest geopolitical issues, trusted partnerships are critical to ensuring logistics networks aren’t left behind.”
Luke Crook, international supply chain director HPC at Spectrum Brands, said:
“With our European-wide operations, it was strategically vital to streamline our logistics network for our brands.
“Partnering with SCALA and DSV has not only enabled our team to better utilise warehouse capacity in our new building, but has increased visibility and control, simplifying our supply chain process.”
Piotr Wojtkowski, commercial director of contract logistics, at DSV Poland, said:
“We are pleased to have supported Spectrum Brands and SCALA in what has been a hugely successful project.
“The supply chain industry continues to evolve rapidly, and it is becoming increasingly important that logistics networks are not only able to keep pace, but remain ten steps ahead for maximum efficiency and capacity.”
