Annual competition, The Fresh Connection 2013, saw more than 300 company and 100 university teams from 25 countries competing for this year’s winner’s title, with SCALA’s UK winners Kimberly-Clark finishing in 5th place overall.
Top teams from around the world were chosen to represent their company at the final held in Istanbul. Representing the UK was Kimberly-Clark, finishing in a very admirable fifth place out of more than 400 teams.
SCALA ran the qualifying rounds of the competition nationally across the UK from April to June of this year.
Ray Norris, European Supply Chain Director at Kimberly-Clark stated:
“We have been a long-term supporter of the Fresh Connection so I am absolutely delighted with our team’s exceptional performance.”
The theme of supply chain risk management was incorporated into this year’s exciting challenge, presenting participants with the opportunity to deal with unfolding events including natural disasters, strikes, high market volatility, quality issues, disruption, theft and more.
The 2013 challenge was the most invigorating yet, with participants having to implement risk mitigation and prevention strategies in order to cope with the potentially problematic events. A new scenario planner was built into the business simulation, adding another level of complexity to the simulation dynamics.
Kimberly-Clark’s team member Michael Jarvis believes:
“That drowning, high pressure, stressful feeling, when everything is new and you don’t know your foot from your elbow isn’t so bad actually. It doesn’t last, and pretty soon, you’re enjoying the new challenge.”
The MIT Scalers, representing MIT (Cambridge, USA) were announced as the winning team at the prestigious awards gala.
