Transport Efficiency - KPIs

go back

SCALA was appointed by the Department for Transport to carry out two surveys into food and drinks transport efficiency in 2007 and 2009. Relying heavily on participation by retailers, manufacturers and logistics providers, these Surveys continued similar work by the Department.

1. Recruiting participant companies:
The team ran telephone, e-mail and 'high level' personal meetings with potential participants, followed by regional workshops endorsed by the Minister for Transport. SCALA set out the objectives, processes and benefits, and agreed KPIs to be used.

2. Operational Workshops:
Established a clear common level of understanding with participants, and ensured reliable data collection.

3. Data gathering and analysis:
On the Survey days SCALA provided a 24 hour Help Desk, then supported companies as they assembled data covering over 13,000 vehicles, and finally carried out the full data analysis.

SCALA produced reports - 'Key Performance Indicators for the Food and Drink Supply Chains' - published by the Freight Best Practice Program:

- The main KPIs - vehicle fill, empty running, time utilisation, delays, and fuel consumption
- Supplementary performance comparisons
- A range of Year on Year comparisons
- Individual feedback to companies
