Strategic and Operational Review

go back

This major national supplier of 'Business to Business' office supplies had been acquired by a Private Equity group. The company operated from a number of DCs around the country with varying performance levels and associated issues. SCALA were called in by the CEO with the need to minimise costs and restore customer service levels.

SCALA reviewed the full supply chain and logistics operations including:

  • - Evaluation of numbers and locations of DCs
  • - Routes to customers - direct from supplier, break-bulk from suppliers, or ex stock
  • - Stock policies - centralisation v devolution
  • - Inventory levels
  • - Re-ordering processes
  • - Product profitability analysis
  • - Warehouse operations
  • - Modelling alternative transport operations including out-bases

- Reduced infrastructure to two stockholding DCs with additional delivery transhipment points
- Changed arrangements with some suppliers to reduce warehouse handling
- Introduced increased automation - 'pick to light' and automated conveyering
- Re-organised transport planning and delivery route scheduling
