This large supplier of work and streetwear experienced a number of years of significant growth and this was expected to continue. With over 3,000 skus, and suppliers in the Far East, warehouse capacity was becoming a restraint, inhibiting flow of goods and necessitating off-site storage. A warehouse extension was planned and SCALA was commissioned to devise methods, equipment and layout which would increase capacity and efficiency.
The approach was based around an early and detailed understanding of the way the business operated, followed by careful analysis of the previous year's sales and stock data. This created an insight into product seasonality, stock levels, order profiles and quantities and labour and equipment levels.
The data pointed to a design which drastically changed operating methods within the new extension. Product stored in double pallet racking would be retrieved using crane and satellite equipment for automatic supply to pick locations. Product picking would be by item to conveyor, followed by an automatic sorter to assemble orders. The proposed designs and variations offered payback within around three years and manpower reductions of between 32% and 44%.
