This US owned healthcare at home specialist is a new to UK entity and is building a delivery network capable of servicing consumer deliveries for high value drug based prescriptions. A van based service collects 3rd party products and the HQ/DC picks and packs goods from the in-house pharmacy and from the warehouse. A dynamic route planning/booking tool optimises transport effort and ensures near 100% delivery accuracy and certainty using highly trained staff and the highest of disciplined processes. The requirement was to model various network options for current and future volume levels in this growing business and identify the optimal infrastructure and route planning M.O.
In 2011 SCALA undertook a review of the current depot infrastructure, planning processes, current costs and operating methodology. We recommended closure of a number of sites and the expansion of the NDC plus one other major hub. This ensured consistent levels of service were always maintained but allowed the client to migrate to a more cost effective network which would be future proof as well as flexible in the short and medium term.
- Improved understanding of all options and an immediate reduction in variable operating cost via closure of a small number of sites
- Ability to drive towards a cost to serve commercial model was welcomed and 3rd party business volume could now be costed and priced accordingly
